So don’t hesitate to spend an evening at the Bauduen Astronomical Observatory during your vacation at the Oasis du Verdon. Construction ofthe Bauduen Astronomical Observatory began in 1992. And despite what you might think when you visit, it is the work of a single man. Olivier Planchon, a nuclear and seismic activity expert by profession, set himself the challenge of building this facility in just a few years. He chose a site located just 5 minutes from the village.

This choice is far from trivial, as its purpose is to shield observers from the city’s light pollution. Olivier succeeded in his endeavor and built the first telescope himself, which attracted curious onlookers and astronomy enthusiasts. This required him to acquire a number of new skills (computer-controlled digital cameras, thermal expansion of steel, high-precision mechanics, and more). It was therefore with great pride that he put his creation into service in 1994. Since then, the telescope has undergone regular improvements to make it increasingly effective. It is now considered a high-quality professional instrument. With its exceptional brightness, it gives visitors the opportunity to observe constellations and other celestial objects with great precision.

Tours and Activities at the Bauduen Astronomical Observatory

Currently, there are several telescopes available on the grounds, and Olivier and his teams offer a wide range of exciting activities, including some permanent exhibits.

First, there are tours of its astronomical observatory and facilities, as well as a viewing of the sun.
