Discovering the Verdon and Its Wonders

The Verdon is a river with turquoise waters that connects the Southern Alps to Central Provence. It rises between La Foux-d’Allos and the Pic des Trois-Évêchés, at an elevation of 2,819 meters, then winds its way for nearly 175 km before joining the Durance.

As it flowed, it carved out the Verdon Gorge, a protected natural site featuring dizzying cliffs and spectacular views.

The river and its gorges form a natural border between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Var departments and contribute to Provence’s unique identity—wild and luminous.

The Verdon River: Where Nature Comes Alive

The Verdon River reveals its spectacular natural landscapes, shaped over thousands of years.

Landscapes

Set amid limestone plateaus, mountains, and dizzying gorges, this region is distinguished by its cliffs and turquoise-hued waters. Located at the crossroads of Mediterranean and Alpine influences, the Verdon benefits from a wide variety of microclimates, which give rise to remarkable biodiversity. The river forms the central axis of this ecosystem, protected by the Verdon Regional Nature Park.

Flora

The sunny slopes are home to holm oaks, pines, and garrigue vegetation, while the cooler areas are home to maples, linden trees, and beech trees. On the plateaus, lavender and thyme perfume the air, and the riverbanks are home to vegetation adapted to wetland environments.
