There’s nothing better than a romantic getaway in the heart of the Alps, in the Verdon Valley, where “Green Provence” blends enchanting natural beauty with charming Provençal villages. Castellane is an iconic town, perched on a hillside and situated at the gateway to the Verdon Gorges. Much more than just a tourist trap, Castellane is an ideal base for exploring the region.

One reason the Verdon Gorge attracts so many visitors is that it is the largest canyon in Europe. In some places, it reaches heights of up to 700 meters. Its landscape, shaped over time by the erosion of limestone, makes it a destination unlike any other in France and throughout Europe.

The crystal-clear waters of the Gorges have a unique feature: they originate directly from Europe’s largest glacial lake, Lake Allos. Located in the Mercantour National Park—a highly protected and magnificent area—it marks the end of the Mercantour range. The Mercantour extends all the way to the Alpes-Maritimes, near the French Riviera. Surrounded by larch trees and marmots scampering peacefully through the grass, Lake Allos offers magnificent views to be savored to your heart’s content.

A romantic stroll through the Verdon Gorges

For a complete change of scenery, start your morning with a peaceful horseback ride along the Verdon’s picturesque rivers and lakes. You can also opt for a road trip along the Route des Crêtes du Verdon. This is a 24-km loop that circles the canyon. The route can also be explored on foot or by e-bike. Stop every now and then to admire the breathtaking views, explore the medieval villages, and marvel at the canyon’s sparkling blue waters.

If you enjoy hiking, you’ll be spoiled for choice with 1,500 hiking trails in the area. The Sentier Blanc Martel is a popular 16-km trail connecting the towns of Palud-sur-Verdon and Rougon.

Sports Challenges for Couples

In the afternoon, try your hand at canoeing, paddling your way to the hidden lakes and caves of the gorges. Kayaking is by far the most popular activity in the Verdon. The gorges are also very popular with free-climbing enthusiasts.

The canyon walls offer more than 800 climbing routes covering all levels of difficulty. Their depth ranges from 250 to 700 meters, and the most famous sites are Paroi Rouge, Baume aux Pigeons, Escalès, and Dérobée. You can rent a variety of water sports equipment near our campground close to Lake Sainte-Croix. And if the shores of this lake are a bit too calm for your taste, head to Palud-sur-Verdon and Rougon instead.

After a full day of fresh air and mountain breezes, be sure to end your day with a romantic meal before returning to the campground for a well-deserved rest. Le Mur d’Abeilles and La Bastide de Moustiers are two exceptional places where you can enjoy a dinner for two.
